The Purpose of CERT
Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet the demand for these services. Factors such as the number of victums, communication failures, and road blockages will prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment's notice by dialing 911. People will have to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life saving and life sustaining needs.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognized the importance of preparing citizens for this purpose and trains citizrn groups all over the country to help keep people alive in their communities until first responders can get to them.
The Merritt Island CERT Team
The Merritt Island Community Emergency Response Team, is a Not-for-profit 501-c3 organization of citizens within the Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach areas, trained and coordinated with other CERT teams by the Brevard County Fire Rescue for the primary purpose of activating in the aftermath of a major disaster to help save lives as auxillary responders.

Merritt Island has a population of approximately 44,000 people and Cocoa Beach has a population of approximately 15,000 people. Both populations are growing and almost double during the winter months. This area has been identified as prone to hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires, flooding and is a potential terrorist target.
